how do you think films and television get made?? hate to break it to you, but it's all for the money. new line cinema didn't say "we love tolkien, pj, let's do this for free!" they were literally looking for a franchise hit when they decided to take the films over from miramax - which is exactly what every studio and their mom is trying to do now!!! it's movie business, baby! to say the people behind trop - the actors, the casting directors, the production designers, the vfx artists, the art directors, the armorers, the costume designers, the set decorators, the makeup artists, the ADs, the carpenters, painters, prop-makers, steelworkers, laborers, animal handlers, sound editors, miniature builders, stuntpeople, craftspeople, movement and dialect coaches, trainers, lighting techs, jewelers, etc. - don't care about the story they're telling???? is a wild reach. obviously they work for the showrunners who work for amazon who care the most about making a profit, but so did peter jackson and new line!! wanting your project to be financially and critically successful is not an inherently evil thing, come on guys, are you still buying into the starving artist fallacy 😭

there are tons of little nods to the silmarillion and other parts of the legendarium in the rings of power. yes, there are also changes and goofs, but lotr and the hobbit film trilogies also had their fair share of changes and goofs. i just think that "these people didn't read the books/this is just a money grab/pj & co. cared about the source material while these losers clearly don't" are tired arguments used to justify subjective opinions, not to mention the way it reeks of revisionist history considering the way tolkien purists initially took great issue with deviations made in lotr and especially the hobbit.

it's almost like...the most hated tolkien adaptation is ever the current one.

Maker help me, I was in the shower and now I'm typing this straight into a post.

I think I'm cooking something....

So the crossroads.... the Caretaker says it's the place all dreams and spirits pass through (or something to that effect) and that's why the Evanuris want it.

All dreams and spirits....

So here's Rook, being a good little mortal and 'Oh no! Treviso! Minrathous! Blight! Dragons! Blood mages!' and running around on the material- (plane? realm? not!Fade?) solving all these mortal problems and forgetting the very first plea for help he receives is from the Caretaker ("Now imagine all blighted.").

The Caretaker is not a Rook but they do their best. It holds... almost long enough. But here's Rook in the Lighthouse, with many of his companions, dreaming. The crossroads comes under heavy fire and Rook's dream self is in the middle of it. Elgar'nan puts their dream at the top of his priority list. If he can blight Rook it's game fucking over and he knows it. (Rook doesn't know it but that's a different conversation).

Rook's dreams are dark, twisting things, like a shadow of the regret prison. Looping twisting paths bend and warp through a dark landscape that has only enough breaks to show glimpses of Rook's worst nightmares and wildest dreams married in a painfully tempting parody of each other. He sees blighted mage children being taught with kind and gentle instructions. He watches all the fighting cease as the blight embraces all equally. Slavery is no more as all are equal under the blight. Abuse, blood magic, fear itself - it all crumbles to dust in the overwhelming, unstoppable, unavoidable equalizer of the blight. Human folly wouldn't twist spirits from their purpose and demons and abominations would no longer exist.

Elgar'nan shows Rook the very worst of the world he's fighting to preserve and leaves Rook no room to remember the good or the light. The path eventually brings Rook to a high balcony overlooking Minrathous - free of slavery and blood magic. On a pedestal a chalice sits, a tarnished, blackened version of the Joining Chalice he saw in Weisshaupt. It's filled with blackened liquid.

"I could heal so many wounds. I could fix all that ails your world. I could make you whole again. Why do you fight me so?" The voice is everywhere and nowhere at once. But Rook turns, looking up instinctively, and there sits Elgar'nan (before Tearstone). Rook can only think how beautiful he is. How right he is. What a kind and gentle master he would be....
